Fringe World 2018: My top picks

It’s time to say goodbye to boring and hello to Fringe World Festival 2018! There is already a buzz of excitement in the air, as Perth gets ready to treat you to world-class performances from 26th January until 25th February.

Fringe World is one of the most anticipated arts and cultural events on WA’s calendar – and so it should be, considering it’s now the third biggest Fringe Festival in the world with more than 750 shows across 130 venues.

This year some of my favourites are back with new shows, the best venues are at it again, and there are a few new thigs thrown into the mix – like Noodle Palace moving from its iconic spot in Northbridge to Elizabeth Quay; the super fun Ice Cream Factory just down the road from the Pleasure Garden; the Showman’s Fair at the Urban Orchid in Fringe Central (a Dutch mini-festival with live performances and a long-table dining experience); and more hubs and venues opening up around the outer-suburbs to make Fringe even more accessible.

So, where do you even start when it comes to deciding which of the 750 shows to see? With my top picks, of course!

Fringe World 2017: my top picks

It’s here! Following the media launch this morning, the 2017 Fringe World Festival will kick off tomorrow and run through until 19th February.

When I first started writing my top picks posts back in 2013, there were about 250 events to choose from across the entire festival – this year, there are a whopping 700+ events to choose from, across more than 150 venues. I just think that is absolutely incredible – although it does make it hard to narrow down my top picks!

Fringe World 2016: El Bizarro review

El Bizarro is back after a sold out debut season last year, with the very best sideshow rarities, human oddities and variety superstars from all around the world.

While definitely not for the faint-hearted, this incredible show is hands down one of the best you will see at Fringe World this year.

Above all else El Bizarro is a celebration of the bizarre, a vibrant, energetic and fun spectacle that is sexy and shocking in equal mix. The carefully curated line-up of quality entertainers had the audience laughing and gasping, with an electric atmosphere that hung around long after the final performance.

Danger Cabaret presents Freaks and Fishnets review

A North Perth strip club was one of the last places I could have imagined spending my Sunday night, but the Doll’s House turned out to be an incredibly fitting and relaxed environment for the latest offering from one of Perth’s hottest entertainment agencies, Danger Cabaret.

Fresh off a run of incredible shows at Fringe World 2015 , and flying in the face of Perth’s recent string of venue closures, Danger Cabaret put together a one-night only show designed to dazzle and delight, and blow those post-Fringe blues away.

Fringe World 2015: El Bizarro review

Promising a hedonistic carnival atmosphere and delivering with the perfect mix of glamour and the bizarre, El Bizarro nailed the sweet spot that comes from being both entertaining and professional.

While definitely guaranteed to make you hold your breath in awe, the talented tribe of sideshow freaks, misfits and stunning beauties refused to rely on cheap tricks, instead putting their bodies, minds and wits on display in an act that was (despite blood, nudity, fire, stunts and pain) professional and polished.
