Fringe World 2019: Suns of Fred – The Greatest Showmen & Another Guy review

Winning over the hearts of Perth one hip thrust at a time, Suns of Fred are a super slick, high-energy, rollercoaster of comedic cabaret.

The home-grown trio have performed to sold out shows across Australia and internationally, and it’s easy to see why – with great chemistry, smooth moves and impressive harmonies, they’ve got the goods to get you laughing.

Musical comedy is a not-so-secret Fringe World love of mine, it just can’t be beaten for an easy-going good time, and with loads of talents and tight quips, Suns of Fred: The Greatest Showmen & Another Guy is playful, cheeky, and hits the spot.

With an upbeat energy and instant likeability, Mickey J, Sly and Fox take to the stage…and then again, as they decide to try out a new intro. With slick Janet Jackson style moves, they launch into an hour of song, dance and jesting, with Fox the butt of most of the jokes (which OK, it works, but I do wish they’d step away from thee stereotypical tropes just a little).

The night quickly hit a high point when they targeted the right audience member, who got even more involved than anyone expected when Mickey J treated him to some close-up thrusting.

These guys have known each other for 21 years and their moves are incredibly polished, but it’s great to see that even after so long they can still make each other laugh, and that, for me, was one of the best parts of the performance.

With their signature-style of synchronised moves, confidence and mock-tension, Suns of Fred made their way through a homage to both Side Boob and Side Dick, gave a nasal rendition of 90s boyband nostalgia, took the saddest rollercoaster ride ever, got groovy with Grease and Dirty Dancing numbers (that lift!), and had the crowd in fits of laughter as a story about a strawberry patch lead to an impressive Michael Jackson dance number.

If you’re looking for a way to ease yourself into the risqué world of Fringe, Suns of Fred are it – cheeky but talented, slick and charismatic, they’re just the right amount of naughty and nice to get you laughing out loud and feeling good.

Catch Suns of Fred: The Greatest Showmen & Another Guy at 6pm on 10th February at the Comedy Lounge, Perth.
