Those in the know, know you can’t say no to a Mary St Bakery donut. The fluffy but dense, sweet yet tart lemon maple pecan flavour is an all-time favourite. You can pick one up from Highgate, West Leederville and the CBD (QV1 and Allendale Square).
Find Perth’s freshest doughies at Top Dup – these glazed brioche babies are the stuff dreams are made of. It’s a tough choice between the newbie combos like white choc glaze with coconut crème or milk choc peanut butter crunch, and the classic numbers like blueberry and lemon glaze. Go straight to the source in Willagee (open from early morning until sold out) or keep your fingers crossed for more pop-ups around town.
Bored by all the other doughies? Get yourself to MOP Donuts, stat, for a glorious drunken donut with an alcohol-fuelled filling. There’s no such thing as a boring donut here – think a blue glaze with popping candy, a double Nutella filling, a sugared donut stuffed with Reece’s PB and chocolate, or one of the amazing over the top donuts that are both topped and filled. Find them in Leederville or William Street in the city.
Stalk the Perth foodie markets to get your hands on a melt-in-your-mouth traditional Italian donut from Lena Lu Bombolini. These huge, glorious creations come in flavours like Tim Tam and Nutella and the unbeatable salted caramel and Italian custard. You can also get them delivered straight to your door!
Fluffy buttercream and layers of indulgent cake, freshly baked in small batches. Honestly, how could you say no? From cupcakes to layer cakes, classic flavours to adventurous ingredients, it’s time to get some cake in your face.
Pick the cute as a button red velvet layer cake or chocolate and almond praline cake from Sherbet Café and Bakeshop in Maylands; indulge in the deliciously deceptive Plain Jane vanilla bean layer cake with white chocolate ganache from Holly Raye’s in Bassendean; or pop into Sugar & Nice in Mt Lawley to order a custom cake – think drip cakes, semi-naked cakes, unicorn cakes and beautifully decorated wedding cakes – and try a cronut, macaron or brownie while you’re there.
It’s not often to hear a sweet treat referred to as ‘exquisite’, but that’s just what Louis Boeglin Patisserie’s desserts are. Beautiful and delicate yet with a serious flavour punch, trust me when I say you must try the chocolate peanut slice – smooth dark chocolate with a crunchy peanut butter base, it’s unbelievable and addictive. Seek them out on the market and foodie scene, including at the Inglewood on Beaufort markets from Oct to April.
Do your sweet tooth a favour and head to Maison Saint Honore in Caversham for a delicate macaron, flaky croissant, fresh cruffin, or my favourite – the gold bar, with dark chocolate mousse and crunchy praline encased in a gold-dusted chocolate shell.
If that’s not enough, there’s always Chu Bakery for their innovative take on the choux pastries, eclairs and cheesecakes; Bites by D for beautiful petits gateaux with irresistible ingredients like chocolate cremeux, vanilla crème mousseline and caramel crème pastry; and Rochelle Adonis for an impressive high tea that’s almost too pretty to eat.
For a truly impressive dessert experience, Measure Bar’s dessert menu, available from 6pm til late, is sure to hit the spot. Picture a brownie base with peanut bavarois, caramel popcorn, popcorn gelato, brulee banana, salted caramel powder and chocolate ganache. Or milk chocolate mousse with Darjeeling panna cotta, cocoa soil, bergamot truffle and soy milk sorbet. Drooool.
