Fringe World 2017: The Little Death Club review

Calling all punks, freaks and weirdos – if you want to get a little loose and late night, The Little Death Club is just the debauchery you’re looking for.

The always witty and deliciously inappropriate London Cabaret Award winner Bernadette Byrne (best known as half of the hilariously bawdy EastEnd Cabaret duo) is here to shake up Fringe World with her new dark and salacious after party.


Each night the show features a rotating, hand-picked line-up of the hottest acts Fringe has on offer, mixed in with a killer dose of Bernadette’s infamous musical comedy. This woman is a master at making the audience feel just the right amount of uncomfortable, as she flirts through the tracks and gets up close and personal with the crowd, pleading with them to talk dirty to her. The night really found its groove once she starting belting out some new songs that mixed her signature dirty humour with a vocal talent that really hit the mark.

In the first ever showing of The Little Death Club, we were treated to performances from four special guests, starting out with a high energy, cheeky burlesque number from Melbourne’s Bettie Bombshell that quickly worked its way from classy to wild, much to the audience’s delight. Her signature ‘Charleston’ act was a real firecracker, incorporating a touch of magic, a complete mid-act costume change, and more high energy 1920s vaudevillian style dancing than you could poke a stick at. You can catch more of her in guest spots in Red Light Confidential, Cut Throat Cabaret and Michael Wheatley & the Dirty Carpet Disco Band.

Next up was the one-man sketch comedy character powerhouse Josh Glance with two utterly bizarre and yet ultimately hilarious numbers that left the crowd in hysterics. You can catch more of Josh’s crazy mash-up of sketch, musical comedy and physical stupidity in his solo show 99 Schnitzels (Veal Ain’t One).

Superduo drag darling Kitten N’ Lou dazzled with a glitter bomb of campy magic featuring impressive costumes and killer facial expressions, enthusiastic dance and irreverent striptease, recovering with absolute professional when there was a difficulty with their audio track. You can see these polished Fringe-favourites in their headline show, Holier Than Thou.

Ultimate punk rock idiot Tomas Ford stole the show with his two musical numbers, which mixed badass moves, killer vocals and incredible comedic timing with a liberal sprinkling of manic hilarity.   A little bit silly and a whole lot of fun, this is one guy you don’t want to miss at Fringe – he’s got a whole bunch of shows up his sleeve this year including Tomas Ford’s CHASE! 

Throw in some riotous yet good-natured numbers featuring (un)lucky audience members and more inappropriate comments than a Trump highlights reel, and you’ve got The Little Death Club – a wonderfully dysfunctional, dangerously funny cabaret, sideshow and burlesque spectacular after party to end all after parties!

The Little Death Club is on every Friday and Saturday night until the 18 February, at Circus Theatre in Fringe Central, and you can expect to see world-class acts including Le Gateau Chocolat, Otto & Astrid (Die Roten Punkte), Jess Love and Asher Treleaven during its run.
