The Retail Project: The Tasty Pear

If you’re looking for a one-stop spot to shop local, The Tasty Pear is the place for you.

This glorious treasure-trove of handmade goodies has a huge range from local and WA artists and creators, making it the perfect place to buy a gift or something special for yourself. It also makes shopping local super easy – it’s open 6 days a week, so you don’t have to hunt down your favourite artists at the markets or make guesses about the opening times associated with small shops.

I have to admit it’s been awhile since I’ve been into the Bassendean Shopping Centre, but I really wish I’d discovered this hidden gem sooner! The Tasty Pear has been in the centre since November 2014, and it’s a lovely, huge space with gorgeous lighting and a wonderful low-key atmosphere.

Everything in store is carefully curated by three incredibly talented women – artist and winner of the Local Award at the Bassendean Art Awards, Gillian Cordiner; the creative force behind violetclothing, Chantal Kilpatrick; and ceramic artist and an absolute handmade enthusiast Kate Stevens.

The store is staffed by the creators themselves which helps give it a really intimate feel, as well as plenty of opportunities to chat with the makers.

So what exactly can you find here? We’re talking everything from candles, skincare and organic cleaning products, to aprons, kids clothing and jewellery. There’s stationery and artwork and ceramics and serving ware, accessories and kids toys and textiles – basically all manner of gorgeous things for you, your friends, your family, your kids and your home.

You can expect to see well-known local brands like Clean Slate Skincare, Bare Botanics and Purity Organics, alongside names like Knotstalgia, Gill Cordiner, Sharon Dawes, Osmosis Designs, Liz Briggs Design, Fluid Ink, Ernest & Bumble, Ollie and Brody, Artisan Spice, and loads more.

I couldn’t resist picking up a few things for myself and walked with any absolutely gorgeous card, made on an old-fashioned letterpress by Fluid Ink; the calm organic hydrating mist (chamomile and rose) by Bare Botanics; and Second Nature Botanicals natural disinfecting spray (which smells pretty damn good).
