Small business is, in fact, big business. In WA, small businesses make up about 97 per cent of ALL businesses – proof that in the west, the #girlbosses, entrepreneurs, family-owned ventures, working mums and start ups are doing something right. But running a small business can be a LOT of hard work and take more than a little bit of blood, sweat and tears. So why not help a small biz out when you can and shop with them first?
As many of you know, I love coming home after a long day and getting cosy on the couch while a delicious candle burns nearby, so kicking off this shop local feature with candles was a no brainer for me! Why not support these awesome Perth makers by visiting them online, at a market or a local stockist stat.
Opulenza makes luxury scented candles that are chock full of fragrance – think combinations such as pink lychee and melon, cool citrus and basil, lychee and black tea, wild currant, lime and anise, white tea and berries, and mango and papaya. They’ve currently got three collections, including the absolutely beautiful diamond collection (with sharp, clean angled glass cut in a diamond formation – the black one is my fave!) and the Vogue collection featuring matte black and matte white jars with silver or rose gold lids.
Cinque Candle Co
Based on a love of homewares, styling, typography art work and, of course, an obsession with soy candles, Cinque Candle Co candles are made from non-toxic additive free pure soy wax and cotton braid lead free wicks, for a clean burning candle. They’ve got a big list of fragrances to choose from, and they all sound amazing – coconut and lime (yes please!), brown sugar and fig, espresso noir, coconut and vanilla, and sandalwood and clove. In addition to a range of fabulous typography labels like “#girlboss”, “shine bright like a diamond”, “I love you to the moon and back” and “je’taime”, they also offer custom labels and a range of gorgeous accessories including marble coasters and notebooks – making Cinque Candle Co the perfect one stop shop for gifts.
Common Candle Co
If you love candles as much as I do, you need to get along to a Common Candle Co candle making workshop – just be warned you might have to go on their long waitlist, because they’re pretty damn popular! On top of this, they’ve got beautifully glossy black, white and rose gold glass candles, and do some super cool collaborations, including the current one which includes a Fizz Ink donut trinket! You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to fragrance – there’s fruity (ebony and peach, hot baked apple pie, coconut lime, frosted cranberry), sweet and creamy (salted caramel, vanilla bean, crème brulee), florals (sweet pea and vanilla, pink peony, white lilac and lavender), and fresh and clean (avocado and mint, spiced rum, vanilla crème and cocoa butter).
Local pickup is available from Leederville, or you can order from Common Candle Co online and get a free tea light to sample the different scents with orders over $30. Or give them some Instagram love.
La Sorella Soy Candles
La Sorella hand poured soy candles has got three important words for you – tie dye collection! The La Sorella Soy Candles X Yeah Tie Dye Limited Edition candles are made from soy wax and have a lead-free cotton wick and come in pink, blue and marble colours – and they’re super pretty! La Sorella Soy Candles was born from a love of winter, fragrance and the relaxation that only comes from snuggling up in bed by candlelight and their name, La Sorella, means “sister” in Italian and is a tribute to the owner’s sister who taught her how to pour her first candles. How sweet is that? Their candles also come in black, copper and white glass with lids and the classic collection comes in clear or frosted glass jars. Take your pick from delish fragrances like coconut lime, clean linen, French vanilla, lychee and black pear, and Angel Wings – a custom scent that combines rose, jasmine and Hawthorne with musk and wood, along with the sweeter notes of French vanilla.
Ginger & Lucille
Ginger & Lucille’s candles are hand blended, hand poured and made in small batches to ensure quality and consistency, and come in medium and large glass jars in addition to a beautiful marbled jar collection. Their scents are some of my absolute favourite and that’s because of the layers – for example, the coconut and sweet lime candle has top notes of lime, lemon and grapefruit, middle notes of coconut and base notes of sandalwood and vanilla, Oh yes! Some of their other delicious combinations include black rose and sandalwood (with hints of blood orange and musk), salted caramel and vanilla, jasmine and peony rose (with jasmine and lilac blended in a light musk base) and basil, bergamot and wild lime.
If you have a fave local candle maker that I haven’t included, make sure you mention them in the comments so I can check them out!
