Fringe World 2013: my top picks

January means many different things to different people: new beginnings, resolutions, fresh starts. To me, one of the things it represents is four weeks of the most diverse entertainment Perth has to offer.

From burlesque to boylesque, luchadores and lustful lyrics to eccentric, enigmatic extravagances the festival has something for everyone – almost 250 events and 2000 artists across plays, exhibitions, cabarets, comedies and circus acts.

The 2013 Fringe World festival runs from January 25th to February 24th at a range of venues throughout Perth. The complete program can be found at but for those of you who don’t know where to begin, my top picks are as follows

(all images & blurbs are from the Fringe World website):

Frisky and Mannish: Extra-curricular activities
School? College? Job? Yawn. Life isn’t about spreadsheets, it’s about joy and laughter and pop music. Frisky and Mannish, London’s resident experts of pop hermeneutics and ‘fully-blown superstars’ (TimeOut), are back in Perth to blow the bloody roof off. They’ll be letting their hair down, and letting rip.

Aardvark Variety Hour
Featuring Perth’s favourite boys of burlesque, The Astonishing Johnny Domino and the enigmatic eccentric Jon Madd come together to bring you a true variety of their combined talents. Witness feats of strength and magical wonder as this dynamic duo leave their audience in shock and awe.

This filthy-minded troupe of high-flying circus bandits and savage gender offenders slams together a beef-caked and disorderly line-up of Australia’s award winning mischief-makers in a circus infused variety show for the not so faint hearted.

City of Shadows: a song cycle of murder, misfortune and forensics
Winner of the 2012 Martin Sims Award, Rachael Dease’s City of Shadows returns from a critically acclaimed season at New York Fringe. Don’t miss this moving song cycle inspired by our dark past, featuring WA’s brightest young musicians.

Lucha Royale [eta: please be aware that this show has pulled out of the Fringe World line up]
The winners of 2012’s PerthNow Peoples Choice Award, your favourite flipping and flying Luchadores return to the ring once more for Perth’s ONLY Lucha libre wrestling show! Combining wrestling with circus, cabaret, burlesque, dance, and more, Lucha Royale is an explosive show set to blow audiences away!

The Chronicles of Burlesque
After consistent sell-out shows, Perth’s premier burlesque troupe, Sugar Blue Burlesque presents their most dazzling show yet! Paying homage to the greatest icons of Burlesque History, the ‘Chronicles of Burlesque’ will showcase jaw droppingly extravagant acts by the sexy, talented and creative artistes of Sugar Blue Burlesque.

Sideshow Macabre
Escape into the beautiful world of the traveling ‘sideshow macabre’. See a secret, beautiful side of circus life usually hidden behind the curtains and the lights.
Experience the glittery shows of the big top, the twisted freak show tent and the cheeky girly show open for your voyeuristic pleasure…

Of course, this is but a taste of what the festival offers – I highly recommend you view the full program and get out there and experience the immense talent Perth has on offer. You won’t regret it!
